On Monday October 6, 2008, Kitchener City Council gave final approval for the Central Library project. The Library Board will now begin work on the design of a renovated and expanded Main Library.

We look forward to sharing with you detailed design plans for the Central Library in the coming year.

Thank you for your support of the library project.

That is excellent news. I am glad to see that the city has recognized the importance of the library as both a cultural and educational institution in our community, now and in the future as the city continues to grow.

As a region like ours continues to expand we must also expand our public services. As someone who lives near the core and enjoys the environment of our libraries and the diversity it offers it is a great feeling to see one of the cities most important buildings expand, and grow to meet the peoples needs.

Our whole family uses the library regularly and we are richer for it. I have talked to immigrants who are amazed at the privilage we have to borrow such a wide variety of resourses. What a great privilage under our noses! everyone in our community has access to enrichment oportunities when the library is held in high regard and cared for and improved on !

It is disappointing that the Library is so preoccupied with its desire for a new Central branch they have ignored the fact that the majority of growth in Kitchener is in its suburban areas, not the downtown core. If it truly desired to improve its services for its patrons it would instead expand its branch operations.

The only thing this new Central branch will do is drain away resources from expanding branch operations and leave the city with a fancy new downtown location. Perhaps the Library Board should listen to Councilwoman Galloway and her desire to see new libraries in locations people actually live.

I am glad to hear that the library will be expanding, but if so will enough information on the where abouts of everything be posted? Mabye the time limit on how long its going to take? Even maybe the factor of if anything might be leaving the library because of the updating. Just a follow up. . .

The Library Board is committed to delivering quality library service to all areas of our community. In 2004, KPL's newest community library opened in Country Hills. Plans are currently underway for a new community library in Kitchener's southwest in 2015/2016.

The Kitchener Public Library Board received approval for the Central Library renovation and expansion project on October 6, 2008. The next step will be to hire an architect to design the Central Library. We are anticipating starting construction in late 2010 with an estimated completion date of early 2013.

As Kitchener re-urbanizes -- concentrating living and work into the core -- an expansion of the Central Library makes perfect sense. I welcome the news with enthusiasm.
